How to hire a licensed locksmith

Locksmith scams are common — especially fake “$19 service call” ads that turn into hundreds of dollars at your door. Here’s how to protect yourself.

1. Verify the license

In Texas, locksmiths (Company: Locksmith Company, LCO) are licensed by the Texas Department of Public Safety, Private Security Bureau. Before you book, look the company up at Texas DPS TOPS. A legitimate locksmith will give you a license number without hesitation.

2. Watch for the classic scam signs

  • A price on the phone that’s far lower than anyone else (“$15–$29 service call”).
  • No business name — they answer with just “locksmith.”
  • An unmarked vehicle and no ID or license on request.
  • Pressure to drill your lock immediately (a skilled locksmith rarely needs to).
  • The price jumps dramatically once they arrive.

3. Hire a GHLA member

Every locksmith in our verified member directory is a licensed Texas professional whose credentials have been checked by an association officer. Membership in the Greater Houston Locksmith Association means accountability to peers and a commitment to the trade.

4. Get it in writing

  • Ask for a written estimate before any work starts.
  • Confirm the total, including any trip or after-hours fees.
  • Keep your receipt — a real business will provide one with its license number.
