How to become a locksmith in Texas

The locksmith trade is a stable, skilled career. Here’s the path in Texas — and how the association helps you along it.

1. Understand Texas licensing

Locksmith work in Texas is regulated by the DPS Private Security Bureau. You’ll generally work under a licensed locksmith company, which handles registration and background requirements. Always confirm current rules on the state site before you start.

2. Learn the craft

  • Key identification and cutting, pinning, and rekeying.
  • Master-key systems and commercial hardware.
  • Automotive and electronic access / smart locks.
  • Safe work and lockout techniques.

GHLA regularly runs hands-on classes (for example, master-key system workshops) where you learn directly from working locksmiths.

3. Keep your license current with CE

Texas locksmiths complete continuing education each renewal cycle. GHLA is a DPS-approved training school (provider #Y00221) that delivers those hours — see our continuing education page.

4. Join the association

Members get mentorship, classes, a marketplace, and a network of established locksmiths across the Houston metro. Create a member account to get started.
